When I was fourteen years old, I gave up eating meat. Even though I loved animals as a child, I couldn’t see them on my plate. I was a friend to the chickens and roosters running towards me each morning for hugs and the lamb that gently licked my tongue with its tongue.
It was difficult to stop eating meat at first. My parents opposed it and thought it was temporary. I persevered and substituted the meat with vegetables, potatoes, rice, or fruits. It was delicious! I found healthy eating books to be a great learning tool and incentive. Vegetarians are different. I felt special, was calm, and smiled all the time. The tempting aroma of barbecue didn’t appeal to me anymore. Because I had conquered one of the seven deadly sins, food as pleasure, I enjoyed being different. I grew up spiritually, even though it was not physical.
My close friends and I decided after a while to give up meat. It was amazing to see how much they felt, how different their personalities were, and how little anger, anxiety, or fear they had. These are the emotions we feel when we eat meat and the feelings animals experience when they are killed.
It has been many years since I was pregnant with my first child. It was time to re-discover my favorite barbecue recipe that I needed to remember how to make. I was disappointed because the sausage and chicken differed from what I liked. It was as if I was trying to eat new foods that weren’t good for me. I had not missed any food in all these years.
Because there are so many articles about this topic, I won’t write anything about it. Each person must make their own decision and feel the need. This is not a diet to lose weight. You can replace meat with legumes, nuts, and eggplant. We are learning more about those cured of illnesses by eating a healthy diet, which includes vegetables and fruits but eliminates meat. Did you know that some diseases can be treated with beef?
Modern man is far from primitive, who used to kill animals for survival. Life is now different. It’s not about survival but spiritual advancement. Everyone searches for their path to overcome vices and achieves false ideals. My journey began when I gave up eating meat. It continues today.
